Under the conditions fo the U.S. embargo with Cuba, travel is severely restricted. While some Americans take the risk of getting caught by sneaking into Cuba via a flight from Mexico, travel for humanitarian purposes – with the apropriate licensing – offers a legal avenue into the country.

“It was so rewarding to meet and talk with these people from whom we have been isolated for so long, and especially gratifying to be able to provide goods which we take for granted in the U.S. but are difficult or impossible to find in Cuba,” Strong said.

The group brought over 800 pounds of medical supplies, clothing, hygiene products, school supplies and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. Some of those supplies were distributed to Cuban people they encountered over the nine-day excursion, while a church and synagogue doled out. the bulk of supplies.

“I spent about $300 of my own money on stuff to bring,” Strong said, listing soaps, shoes and shampoo as some of the items she toted along. “I also asked some of my clients for donations and solicited supplies from my doctors. Everyone was so generous. I was really impressed.”
