“Also, a portion of the money that you spend on the trip gets donated directly back to the people,” Strong said.

Beyond the rewards of helping the people of Cuba, who Strong said have very little possessions and are in need of many basic supplies, she said the trip allowed her to catch a glimpse of a beautiful, colorful culture and land.

“Life felt like it stood still there, at some points,” she said. “The buildings are so old and beautiful and the people are incredibly friendly. It’s also incredibly safe and clean. There is poverty, but the people don’t beg. A child might come up to you drawing a caricature of you and ask for money for it, or women dressed in traditional costumes and dresses might pose with you in a photo for a dollar. But no one tries to hustle you.”

Aside from touring Havana and other cities, Strong also caught glimpses of the lush countryside, secret caves and beautiful beaches.
